Worldwide the trend is to discovering a new urbanism - an emphasis on exquisitely designed, safe, convenient and extremely well-managed cities that nurture human culture and dignity while being powerful economic generators and job creators. This development is inspired with this vision and focuses on one hand, on public environment of quality and distinction, while exhorting private developers to surpass these high ideals with their contributions to the whole.
Streets are bright, lively, vibrant spaces lined with shops, restaurants, sidewalk cafes and filled with street life that promotes safety and surveillance. This is the place where car access and parking while being top order don’t dominate the central ethos that “cities are for people”.
The qualities of landscaping, pedestrian convenience, safety and freedom from threat, be it from vehicles or crime and the richness of living in an urban environment that meets all our needs, without having to get in a car and commute are ever present and uncompromised.
This mixed use development is very popular because of its offering, the live, work, shop and be at leisure within a secure environment and has proved to be very successful in this region. As a result, other developments around are also encouraged by this development and are set to follow suit.
Modeled on Cape Town’s Century City and Johannesburg’s Sandton locally and Gramercy Park, New York internationally, URTC mixed use development is easily accessible via the network of National, Provincial and municipal roads.
The task of making this development international renown is onerous and it requires that developers be committed to this cause. All developments are undertaken in terms of the Development Manual(s) that sets out design requirements and guidelines and are reviewed by the Design Review Panel.
All property owners and tenant bodies form an integral part of the management association, who in turn, contract out the management, publicity, maintenance, cleaning and security of the town. This ensures that its distinctive physical attributes are sustainable and matched with the development environment that promotes growth and portfolio appreciation.
The Gateway Theatre of Shopping

As design of the Gateway shopping centre proceeded, designers, in an effort to forge greater integration between the town centre and the shopping centre, rather than have it as a stand-alone entity within it, established an urban structure consistent with the pedestrian grain of movement in the shopping centre. Palm Boulevard was the key piece of this and was designated as being the focus around which the early qualities of the town centre would grow.
